The 2015 State of the Smart Home report, an annual report released by smart home technology maker Icontrol, shows simplicity and ease-of-use trump technological innovation when it comes to smart home technology. Problems like realizing you left the lights on in the basement after already settling into bed on the second floor and being able to turn it off with a few taps on a smart phone, wanting to watch a movie and, at the touch of a button, turning a living room into a home theater with lighting, visual and audio presets, or locking the front door from the office after leaving in a rush. The report examines the changing adoption indicators and attitudes toward home automation, levels of intent to purchase connected products and desires and concerns about owning ‘connected’ technology. The completely wired house has speakers in every room, video security that can be viewed from any connected mobile device regardless of location, automated door locks that can be turned on and off from anywhere or preset to let in guests or household staff, lighting settings for any time or mood, automated heating and cooling and automatic shade control. According to the Icontrol report, 51 percent of Americans said they would pay up to $500 to make their existing home smart, with 32 percent showing willingness to pay between $500 and $3,000.
